Vice Like Grip

Vice Like Grip are a punk band hailing from Hastings, influenced by bands such as Bad Religion and New Found Glory. After listening to a handful of their songs, I can definitely pick out the ingredients in the recipe.

Vice Like Grip

At a time where the majority of rock bands that young people listen to appear to only be (with no disrespect) You Me At Six, Paramore and Foo Fighters; it’s refreshing to be hearing some good ol’ catchy punk songs again.

Vice Like Grip’s style is not huge on guitar riffs or yelling, but in my opinion is driven by strong vocal melodies. The best part of their songs are the catchy chorus hooks such as the one in their banger ‘Pseudo-Junkie’ which is backed up by some really strong and pleasant sounding harmonies. YouTube videos of their live performances show that they even pull this off in the flesh too which is extremely pleasing to see as this is a downfall that many bands have.

Vocal harmonies are good people, do them more.

As much as I will always love poppy-punk music to be my soundtrack to the summer, Vice Like Grip’s songs can tend to not differentiate much from each other but do not necessarily blend completely in to their scene. There has recently been a huge drop in decent, ballsy sounding punk rock bands and if you agree with me, you should give these guys a good listen.

The main vocalist has a unique sounding voice – it’s not as gruff as you would expect for a punk band. He sings very clearly and has a good vocal range. It sounds like he can go off key very, very occasionally, but I’d imagine that is not what the band are about. The band seems extremely passionate about their genre and I think everyone can respect the hell out of that.

So! If you’re in to bands like Against Me! and Rancid, you should definitely give these guys a listen, they’re good fun. If you don’t believe me, even Itch from The King Blues likes them! Check out his review on Vice Like Grip’s Reverbnation.
